Vergelijk datums met javascript

Ik heb twee datums in javascript:

var first = '2012-11-21';
var second = '2012-11-03';

ik wil graag maken:

if(first > second){
   //...
 }

hoe kan ik dit het beste doen, zonder externe bibliotheek?

Als je datums strings zijn in een strikt yyyy-mm-ddformaat zoals getoond in de vraag, dan zal je code werken zoals het is zonder te converteren naar datumobjecten of getallen:

if(first > second){

…zal een lexografische (dwz alfanumerieke “woordenboekvolgorde”) tekenreeksvergelijking maken – die de eerste tekens van elke tekenreeks vergelijkt, dan de tweede tekens van elke tekenreeks, enz. Wat het gewenste resultaat oplevert. ..

if(parseInt(first.replace(/-/g,""),10) > parseInt(second.replace(/-/g,""),10)){

}

Het controleert of het 20121121-nummer groter is dan 20121103of niet.
